A Liturgically Correct Valentine For You

Now, how did I come up with this, you ask? It was all innocent, I swear! It was sent to me last year by a very Baptist friend who knows nothing of chapel veils or Traditional Catholicism.

Yup, it's vintage!

Feel free to pass it around to your favorite trad. Seriously! If I were a Traditional Catholic, I'd love this!

I was tempted to ask readers to write a fitting sentiment to go with this card, you know, roses are red, violets are blue......but that might turn out to be hysterically funny and that would be a no-no. Or would it? (Erin Manning seems to be on a role lately, with her song about Traditional Catholics set to "American Pie." I'm sure she could come with something here, too.)

Well anyway, Happy Valentine's Day!

  3. This mother is taking her high-spirited boys and running for the hills right along with them.

And if my girls ever pulled anything like this, I'd punish them with a year of doily-wearing.

LOL. What a creepy little card!

  4. Well, to be fair, it's only creepy with interpretation. Lots of people would find it sweet. :)

  5. I'm thinking the people who would find it sweet are largely of the older persuasion. LOL

But that's okay---to each their own.

BTW, I would have found it kind of creepy (in a very humorous kind of way) without your interpretation.....it's just jarring. Plus it's kind of ugly.

Then again, Precious Moments has always made me want to puke.

  6. Personally I am happy that Valen-TMI-es Day is almost over. Facebook status updates are causing me to reach for the barf bag more than usual today. And I think the card is kind of cute.

  7. Okay I'm going out on a limb here, but maybe it's not supposed to be a chapel veil. A look at the dress beneath makes me think it's a Spanish Flamenco dancer or something like that.

Not out on a limb. It's pretty obvious, the off the shoulder dress gives it away. Even today parents don't dress their daughters with off the shoulder dresses. The little girl is dressing up as was typical of St. Valentines cards of the past.

    2. But it is an interesting error. When the St. Valentines card was printed, theme St Valentines cards were rather common and so in turn anyone looking at the card would have looked for a theme.

Why the predisposition to see the card as signifying a little girl in relation to going to Mass when it's so obviously an incorrect theme except for a veil?

    1. And you don't think there's a real edge to Erin Manion's cute little song and following post? It's not all humor.

    2. There is an edge, yes. And it's funny. I can laugh at myself, can you?

    3. And the humor was meant to be tongue-in-cheek as well, 'cause actually it is cute when little girls dress up like brides. Even today. :)

LTG, my last name is Manning, but interestingly enough my husband's family legend says they were Irish O'Mannions who changed their name to avoid the anti-Irish prejudice when they immigrated. Funny, yes?

  10. I think it's adorable regardless of whatever the deep meaning behind it is.

  11. It IS funny.......Precious Moments kind of funny and weird. Just the kind of thing we Catholics needed for Valentine's day ;)

  12. I think it's cute. I really don't think it's a Precious Moments (which I can't stand...I hope I'm right that it's not a P.M.) image. And I had to look closely to see that the dress was off the shoulder - or I would never have noticed.

  13. I never meant to imply that this was actually Precious Moments--just that it's the same kind of weird "cutesy" that makes this chick want to gag. LOL

But as I said before, whatever floats the boat. I've had friends and relatives who put Precious Moments on their wedding cakes.........
